James pushed the beer across to Michael when the other man sank into the chair an hour later and muttered, “Sorry to call you on short notice. I have an issue with one of my clients.”

Michael stared at him with a resigned expression. “Don’t tell me. Fölscher?”

James nodded, “Yeah, it is a delicate situation.”

“Because of Sammy?”

James gaped at Michael, “You know?”

Michael grimaced, “Yeah, I do. And I spoke to Ulrich, but the guy didn’t confide in me yet.”

“I tried to convince him to speak to Daniel, but it seems there is a communication issue. I know Daniel has his own love life to sort out, but I wondered if you couldn’t speak to Daniel. Ask him or Matthew or one of the other senior guys to see if they can talk to Ulrich. I’ve known Ulrich since he was a sixteen-year-old lad. The less the senior guys talk to him, the more he will pull back. It’s an unhealthy situation.”

Michael agreed. “I’ll see what I can do. I can’t promise anything. There are a lot of things going on in the squad at the moment, and Daniel has his hands full.”

“What do you mean?” James frowned.

“It will stay between us?” Michael asked.

“Yes, of course. You know me. If it affects my clients, I need to know,” James demanded.

“I agree.” Michael chuckled, “And you have quite a few clients having the same problem.”

“Come on, Michael. Spit it out.”

Michael laughed, regaling James about the pledge the squad signed the previous year where they committed not to have any new relationships until they won the new competition. He admitted, “I didn’t sign it, but Christopher did, and when he got married, I could see the other guys’ eyes open. The tour was miserable. I’ve never seen so many unhappy guys. After Jakes’ injury, my dad got it out of Daniel, and on Tuesday, they cancelled the pledge. I hope the atmosphere in the squad will improve now.”

When they finished their beers, James got up, “So you’ll speak to Daniel?” he asked.

Michael nodded, “Yeah, I’ll see what I can do.”
